Old Nice; Another Parade
Sunday, February 25, 2018
Our day started with a
90-minute lecture on the history of south France, with a focus on Provence, the
Côte d'Azur, and Nice in particular. It’s
an overwhelming history dating back to the Greeks and continuing through the Romans
and up to the present day. We then
walked to and through the old city.
There’s so much to see. One
interesting feature is the windows on the sides of many buildings which are not
there. These are tromp l’oell:
There’s a daily flower market
which is very busy, and includes a few vegetable stands as well as honey and
other edibles:
The building which Matisse
called home for many years is at the end of the flower market. He lived on the top floor with a view of the sea:
Ww had lunch in the old
city, and then went to today’s parade, called Parada Nissarda. It’s the major Carnival parade, and in
addition to the theme floats there were many political statements done in
floats. Here are Emmanuel Macron, the
President of France, and his wife, Brigitte, who is 24 years older than he
is. Their relationship started when he
was 16 and she was his teacher:
Here are Trump and Rocket
Man:
Here’s Putin riding Big
Ben:
And here’s a float of
Trump, Putin, May and Erdogan, including the Statue of Liberty, etc.:
Here’s how it looked
moving (Click on the little box at the bottom right of the video to see it full screen):
It was cold and damp
today, temperature in the low 50s and drizzle. I think that’s going to be our last parade. Tomorrow artists!
Love the way they depict Trump.
ReplyDeleteThose windows are very realistic! Good to see the strong political messages in their parade - we're not alone.
